Older people

One of Homelessness NSW's policy focuses is single older women.

Studies have indicated that this group as being amongst the most marginalised groups in terms of access to safe, affordable housing. The experience of older single women is often distinct from many other groups experiencing homelessness- most older women have not been chronically homeless but have experienced an event which has led to their homelessness such as death of a spouse, divorce or family breakdown. As such older women who are homeless do not generally have complex needs or require support, they simply need long term secure housing.

In early 2016, Homelessness NSW in partnership with the Older Women’s Housing and Homelessness Group published A Plan for Change: Homes for Older Women  which proposed a series of initiates to help older women to be able to live in homes that are safe, secure and affordable.
