Homelessness NSW statement on rough sleepers in Martin Place

Friday, 23 June 2017

Since 2011 rough sleeping in Sydney has increased by 28%. The February 2017 City of Sydney Street Count found that there were 433 people sleeping rough. At the same time, inner city homelessness services were over 90% full, there is simply nowhere for rough sleepers to go. This situation is occurring because of a lack of affordable housing – there are over 60,000 people on the social housing waiting list while the April 2017 Anglicare Private Rental Snapshot found that in greater Sydney less than 1% of private rentals listed were affordable for people on low incomes.
